Preparing to approach an investor

Compare the investor’s stage, sector and geography with your business. For a network, check its application process; investment decisions can differ among members. Have your pitch deck, traction, use of funds and cap table ready.

Prepare for the network’s process

The Ontario angel-process guide describes preparation, network selection, screening, pitching and due diligence. Treat these as a sequence of conversations with specific evidence at each stage. A network helps organize access to investors; individual members may make their own investment decisions.

York Angel Investors’ current criteria emphasize proof of concept, market validation, team strength and a business capable of scaling. Use those questions to assess readiness: what have customers done, what have you learned and what will the next capital milestone prove?

  • Prepare a concise company overview and current pitch deck.
  • Show customer evidence and a realistic use-of-funds plan.
  • Organize ownership, financial and product records for due diligence.

Build a shortlist by geography and company fit

The preserved Ontario network articles give regional context, while Angel Investors Ontario’s current directory identifies groups and catchment areas. Start with networks relevant to your geography, then check the company stage, presentation process and interests of participating investors.

Maple Leaf Angels describes a focus on seed and early-stage technology companies. Other groups may use different criteria. A useful introduction explains why your business fits the particular network and asks for a relevant next conversation.

  • Record the network, region and reason for fit.
  • Identify its current founder presentation route.
  • Tailor the introduction with customer evidence and a clear funding objective.
