Craig: c o two batteries.
Jon: yeah. you love your batteries.
Craig: well, i like green, energy.
Jon: yeah. yeah. for sure. green energy is great. i love that this uses, c o two in a closed loop. so when excess energy is available, c o two is compressed and stored as a liquid. i think we covered some sort of, battery storage like this, but not co two.
Craig: iron air?
Jon: yeah. yeah. and then those the ones in the hills? there was there was one that i remember with hills.
Craig: we covered a lot of yeah. different battery types, and energy. and i'm not sure if those were the one in the hills. i have to be honest.
Jon: yeah.
Craig: alright. so the c o two battery is basically a dome, and, when things heat up and cool and whatnot, it creates energy.
Jon: yeah. yeah. change in, in density or change in in certain metrics.
Craig: yeah. it's a closed thermodynamic, transformation. the manipulation of co two between its gaseous and liquid phases, like when it cools down and hits up, the c o two warms up, evaporates, and expands, turning a turbine to generate electricity, energy storage. sweet spot is between eight and twenty four hours.
Jon: okay. yeah. it's it's cool because, co two batteries don't degrade over time, apparently, like lithium ion. yeah. and they're made from readily available materials. and they can be scaled up to, like, a grid level type of storage. right? so this is really cool. i think they're planning to build a plant in, wisconsin. is that?
Craig: yeah. i think so. yes.
Jon: yeah. so this is really interesting. the question is, though, how much c o two is needed for a large scale and just because c o two is a huge proponent of of adding to our our global warming, what's the leakage? what's the potential for leakage and potential for, critical kind of, like, releasing the c o two into the atmosphere?
Craig: agreed. and how much co two is in one of these things? like, when you talk about is it so is it dangerous from the environment, from a long term point of view?
Jon: yeah.
Craig: i didn't see right off the top of my head, and maybe it's in one of these other articles, how much power one of these produces. so they compare these to lithium ion battery. the round trip efficiency is seventy five percent, plus. there's no degradation over time. the life span is thirty plus years. capex of one time versus one point seven. the globe the components are available globally versus a lit lithium ion is limited. but, obviously, the battery is this huge dome combination. it's not the same as a lithium ion battery.
Jon: no. yeah. exactly.
Craig: so do you know how much, energy one of these can, pump out?
Jon: no. all i know is that the plant that they're looking to build is twenty, megawatts or yep. two hundred megawatt hour plant, but i don't know. no. i didn't see anything more about this one.
Craig: so they implement integrating co two capture with the co two batteries helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions because it actually takes the c o two out of the air, apparently. directly come so, you know, we can say they're dangerous. but if it's operating for a while, it's pulling it out of the air, and that's definitely helpful.
Jon: for sure.
Craig: safe and efficient, long term storage, you know, are designed to be safer than traditional lithium ion, minimizing risk of overheating and fires, long term storage, renewable energy. in transportation, co2 batteries offers a sustainable alternative for electric vehicles. you know, i guess, obviously, charging them, the ability to store energy efficient while reducing carbon emissions. so are they saying they wanna put the co two batteries in cars?
Jon: i don't know. i hope not.
Craig: or they've been saying
Jon: we'd have to see the energy density. right? yeah. because i would
Craig: just assume they're talking about charging as we move to a, a elect more electric environment, you know, behind the gas station, we could have these huge c o two batteries that are for charging versus, you know, a huge infrastructure. right?
Jon: yeah. but i could see this more for, like so if we're using solar power, at these ev charging stations
Craig: yeah.
Jon: then maybe they, maybe they use the co two batteries as a storage capacity for when there's no solar power.
Craig: absolutely. but the is that would, you know, they'd run constantly. so you know, obviously, you can use them when there's no solar power, but they would be running, i would have twenty four hours a day. because why not?
Jon: yeah. yeah. this is interesting. i i didn't find too much information on these. so, have to do a deeper dive, in batteries.
Craig: yeah. the wisconsin project's receiving a thirty point seven million in federal grant funding from the us department of energy. i had it here somewhere. i'm just trying to i thought i had how much it is supposed to produce, but i don't see it in any of these articles. don't put lighthouse project asking, is a model similar project across the country? yeah. it's not telling me how many megawatts or how many houses it can power.
Jon: that's interesting because, normally, the thing that worries me is that any kind of battery technology that we've covered, any research that we've done, we're able to find that. right? and so why can't we find that?
Craig: yeah. and it might just be you know, that it's not on these particular websites, but it's almost on all of them. so, yeah, little skepticism there. we'll have to see how this, project works. an italian company named energon has already worked on this technology in smaller scale demonstration sites in, sardinia, italy. so i guess it's a question of size of the dome among other things when they're doing all this stuff. so, yeah, we'll have to see because, you know, microsoft is going for, like, a megawatt nuclear reactor to power its ai, or maybe even five megawatts up to do what they wanna do. and so what does this do? you know? and how much space does this take up, and how many you know, is this a natural replacement for something like nuclear?
Jon: i no. because this is energy storage. right? so no. definitely not.
Craig: it's not just energy storage though because it's creating energy. and, the wisconsin is, utility is interesting because they're putting nearly two billion in renewable energy projects over the next few years. so, they'll be interesting to see which ones actually work.
Jon: yeah. yeah. sorry. my understanding was it was just a battery technology. it can't generate electricity.
Craig: or certain
Jon: like, it can from the stored energy.
Craig: well, let's, we'll offer ten hours of energy storage capacity by compressing carbon dioxide. we restored utility. i guess i under a battery system can power roughly twenty thousand homes and would be the first of its kind in the united states. found it. third or fourth article in.
Jon: okay.
Craig: it can power nearly twenty thousand homes. so this is why i, it's a zero emission battery system that's great because from the power, but where does the energy come from? does it not come the going from gas to liquid and back no.
Jon: but okay. but yeah. but the x from my understanding and i could be completely wrong. so when excess energy is available, you compress the c o two and store it as a liquid. so then that's how it stores as a battery. so you have excess energy that is being stored in the c o two battery. then when the energy is needed, the liquid c o two is heated and expanded, and it drives the turbine to generate electricity. so it's not creating its own energy because you're it's storing excess energy. okay. yeah. but you had me second guessing myself there for a second. but i didn't that. yeah.
Craig: well, that's why they call it battery and storage, so we'll have to see. and, thank you for correcting me on this. and i guess it generates electricity because it's stored there and then outputs it. so it's not necessarily generating it as you were, but because it turns the turbines, it actually does. it's just stored there, and the decompression of it turns the turbines.
Jon: exactly. it does generate electricity, but from stored energy.
Craig: yeah. so yeah. stefan was saying before with the last one, you know, what's the patient limits of investor banks and regulators? you know, for when what's plan b for its clients and partners when openai crashes? i guess it depends. if you've been investing a long time, your value, the money that you've only gone up in value. so the risk is much less for the people invested a while ago because the value is down a hundred and fifty billion. the risk is for those people who are jumping in now as they start to go up, is it gonna be this? because the other people can get out anytime. this has gotta be one of the hottest stocks going. right? mhmm.
Jon: yep. it's gotta be. but, knows? who knows where it goes? so.
