Craig: quantum engine entanglement. now i gotta say this is confusing, but go ahead. yeah. let me try to
Jon: explain it. i tried to find more information on it, but popular mechanics is a reputable site, or at least they used to be. i don't know if they still are. but, again, this is a chinese, art based on on, an achievement in china. so i'll take it with a grain of salt. but chinese scientists from the academy of sciences have developed a quantum engine, and what it does is it harnesses the power of quantum entanglement, apparently. so it marks a significant advancement in quantum technology and possibilities for quantum power devices. now how the entanglement engine works, okay, from what i've read. so it's reminiscent of kind of a four stroke engine, but with quantum principles, if that makes sense. so the calcium atoms, they absorb photons from a laser. they expand and interact with a quantum load. the atoms then compress, and the process repeats utilizing the energy differences in entanglement state. now what this article said is that the researchers conducted over ten thousand experiments with calcium ions and found that higher levels of entanglement led to improved mechanical efficiency. and so now that being said, we did miss an article last year. this twenty three had developed a quantum engine using quantum properties of fermions and bosons, which achieved twenty five percent efficiency. so this new one doesn't necessarily surpass previous efficiency levels, but demonstrates that entanglement could potentially produce useful energy. for those of you that are like, well, what the hell does this mean? it could power large scale quantum computers and circuits. we could charge our quantum batteries. hey, craig. and, we can advance quantum sensors and other quantum technologies. now, again, this is really out there. again, what are your thoughts on this, craig? like, do you get this? even though i read this article multiple times, i'm still not understanding this.
Craig: okay. so fully. again again, like, it's, it's based on quantum entanglement, and albert einstein called this spooky action at a distance where, particles are connected at the quantum level. so when you affect one, the exact thing happens to the other no matter the distance across the universe, at least. we haven't measured a limit that it fades at. so, for example, like, this just bring it down to, layman's terms. imagine you got a paradise when you roll one, the other instantly knows what's going on. and no matter how far apart they are, it's like a psychic connection. it would roll, and it would land on the same thing. so imagine that. and now you're saying, alright. we have this one, calcium particle that we're working on, and when we charge it up, the other one eventually charges. the article did talk about, losses this concept doesn't improve conversion efficiency of, previous quantum engines. so is there a loss of some sort of state between the other one being charged that you're no.
Jon: i think it's, it's i don't think there's a loss because i believe that entanglement means there's zero loss between the two entangled particles. i think there's a loss somewhere else.
Craig: yeah. and that's why i was wondering on the conversion efficiency. what
Jon: just for those, like, for those people who are trying to be like, well, what does this look like as far as an engine? like, does it look like a regular car engine with pistons and gears? it's not. it's more like a small box with special equipment. so there's a tiny cage kind of that holds special items, like, let's say calcium in this fact. then a laser shines on the atoms to make them spin and very cold air around it to keep the atoms still. so the special engine only works when it's super, super cold, like, colder than the coldest ice. i think, like, just above zero degrees kelvin. so that's why they need special equipment to study it. so, again, it might not be exciting on the outside, but this engine one day could help power, like we said, quantum computers, quantum batteries. so this could be the infrastructure for the quantum batteries once we develop quantum batteries.
Craig: yeah. and so they're talking about this. they developed a quantum engine that leverages complicated interplay between the fair fermions and the bose einstein fermions there. and the bose einstein condensates. this created energy by replacing heat, the typical energy source of a ice engine, a internal combustion engine, with the quantum nature of the particles in is the gas, i guess, as a press statement. so, the engine had an efficiency of twenty five percent. this is why we're,
Jon: yeah. and so which is bad for a first time or second time. yeah.
Craig: that's so that's why we get to efficiency. so, yeah. this so this is, you know, very interesting. you know, i'm always saying quantum is magic. right? because yeah. the concept is, you know, you we talked about this with quantum batteries, similar state where you plug in a battery at home somewhere or wherever, and the one in your car, the one in your phone it's entangled twin, so it never ever runs out because it's always charged. yeah. you know, you start thinking about how that works and apply that to almost anything. and so they're not talking about they're talking about transferring information with this mhmm. not physical stuff.
Jon: no. no. so i so in theory, you could transfer physical objects. but, where this is right now is it's just it's transferring soup it's it's it's transferring states, if that makes sense, which is what entanglement is.
Craig: yeah. i'm to operate on principles of quantum mechanics using the amazing properties of entangled particles to achieve efficiency levels that would make tesla look like a horse and buggy. yeah. so, you know, your kitchen blender magically blends even the toughest ingredients at warp speed thanks to its super advanced quantum tech. so why cancel your afternoon smoothie? like, it does it you know, the stuff it can do, i mean, that's a bad example. but, the concept is amazing and that things can exist in multiple states at the same time because of these quantum quantum entangled particles because, you know, this one exists in this state and this one exists in this state and that's they rush to become, to the same state.
Jon: mhmm.
Craig: so, you know, i it's really interesting. i love when we talk about quantum. i wanna see this get out of the lab and actually start doing stuff with
Jon: it yeah.
Craig: with this specifically.
Jon: yeah. for sure. this is, again but this is, again, another great step because now they're able to produce energy from quantum entanglement through quantum or including quantum entanglement. i don't know the best word to use. but yeah.
Craig: yeah. i was talking to a quantum founder, not too long ago. i was actually doing a coaching session, so i don't wanna, say who he was and whatnot. but very interesting technology, and he definitely talked me down from quantum is magic. but, so
Jon: as we stay on
Craig: while i still believe it's it like, honestly, it's magic, but that's a whole other discussion at a in-depth level. i'm not saying it's magic like someone's on stage pulling a rabbit of a hat. i'm saying when things can exist in multiple states at the same time and you can control which state is the final outcome, then, you know, we're we're coming to a state of magic
Jon: yeah.
Craig: where, you know, i can decide. i can decide what's on the other side of that door. yeah. that's what i mean by we're moving into that direction. so as we stand on the brink of a quantum revolution, here's a question for you, the audience. are we ready to embrace the wild potential of quantum technology, or do we need a little more time to sink in? you know, share your thoughts with us. we can't wait to hear what you think about this future of this crazy, technology.
