Craig: google's getting into the game of weather forecasting. yes.

Jon: yeah. so we all know weather, is very difficult to predict. and, you and i have talked about this and, like, how can we not use machine learning algorithms to come out with with weather predictions going forward? and there's actually a cool movie that is totally not scientifically accurate, but i love it, called the day after tomorrow, where they do use a, an algorithm to predict, and it's crazy. it's it's a great movie, if you can let go of the scientifically inaccuracies of it, but it's great. but i digress. so this is google's deepmind supercomputer. so they've made significant strides in the field of weather forecasting. obviously, utilizing machine learning techniques to improve accuracy of predictions. so they're hoping to enhance the reliability of weather forecasts, which are crucial for various sectors, including agriculture, transportation, disaster management, john irwin's travel to toronto, all that sort of stuff. so the cool so i before we dive into this, something i learned recently about forecast, which kinda blew my mind. so if you get a forecast for rain, and they say there's a forty percent chance of rain, it doesn't mean that there's a forty percent chance that it's gonna rain. it means that in the area that they're forecasting, forty percent of that area, there's a hundred percent chance of rain. so it's crazy. but, anyways, i digress. so their approach is focusing on using neural networks, and they're gonna analyze vast amounts of meteorological data, for more precise short term forecast compared to traditional methods. what are your thoughts on this?

Craig: so i always say lying weather app, because, you know, it's never right.

Jon: yeah. it

Craig: doesn't really matter which one you use. people argue about this and that. and i know pilots use radar specific stuff, and, you know, they can be watching the clouds by the minute. but i pull out my iphone, and with the person beside me, same phone, same ios, same app, sitting in the same spot, they'll get a different forecast than i will.

Jon: yeah.

Craig: and, you know, when it says it'll be this, it'll say it'll be that, it'll say it. so which is it? right? are you reading from a different weather station just because because there's three or four in burlington or is this or is that? so the and, you know, i always joke around. if you can't tell me what the temperature is outside right now, how are you gonna tell me what it is gonna be in ten years or a hundred years from now? like, seriously. this is you get this right so people will believe you about more other things because

Jon: yeah.

Craig: so when you get into this, it's been obviously a problem. because you start talking to two climate scientists, and they say, you know, their biggest problem is clouds. you know? clouds are really, really big and at the same time, really, really small. and their biggest problem is clouds, and you you know? it's funny to listen to them talk about it, just because so they're trying to, the weather forecast has always been, like, trying to predict the next seasons of the hottest fashion trend. but here with deepmind, the ai powerhouse known for beating humans at chess, now setting their sights on predicting the weather. so they're going to harness deep learning and data analytics, analyze a wealth of weather data. this means not just looking at past data. they're whipping up forecast that could soon incorporate real time updates and even adapt on the fly. so when sudden gust of wind blows your hat off, guess what? ai could have predicted that, micro weather event. so you know, is this really gonna be more accurate? what's fascinating in the comparison between, deepmind's ai driven models and traditional forecasting is think of it like using your trusty old bicycle for a sleek exchanging your, trusty old bike for a sleek electronic scooter. both get you from point a to point b, but one does it a whole lot faster and more efficiently. while traditional models tend to plot along with physical equations, deepmind can evaluate patterns and make predictions at lightning speed, potentially outpacing conventional methods, especially in rapidly changing conditions. so case studies have shown deepmind significantly improving rainfall forecast in some regions. imagine communities not knowing it might rain, but having a reliable system that tells them exactly when to grab, their galoshes or fold up the picnic blanket. you know? we're now getting good progress. and we've seen that rain starting in five minutes, but a lot of times, it doesn't happen. it's just rain, you know, all day and the rain doesn't come. so is this gonna improve the weather? they say, you know, does it more efficiently? i don't know what that means because ai and deepmind uses so much cpu and energy. is it actually more efficient,

Jon: or is it just faster? i think it's just more it could be potentially more accurate. now, there was an app that was looking to do something like this. i think it was called deepsky or darksky or something. darkgray. darksky. darksky. and they were looking to do, like, more localized kind of, i wonder what happened to them because i think they were deploying, little weather stations all over to try to become more accurate. i wonder they went belly up?

Craig: i don't know. i love the app. i had to way back in the day, i had to sideload it on my apple devices because it was only available in the us, not in canada.

Jon: yeah. but not on android. you can you could download that apk and install it.

Craig: so i haven't looked at it for years and years and years because after a while, you know, i don't need ten weather apps. you know? it's just an it's enough's enough. and, hopefully, with this, that might change things. but, you know, is this actually gonna be better? so what's next? the future weather forecast and could see personalized updates, swooping in on your smartphone where you are, like, because of your calendar, because of where you're going, because of your plan for the day, i'll get different alerts than you'll get, telling you when to go for a jog or when to reschedule your outdoor lunch plans or maybe you should leave earlier for your meeting because of the weather. real time data being crunched constantly by ai, we expand more tailored forecast that cater directly to our unique climates and needs. so, is this something you think is gonna change the game, or do you just think it's another thing we're just throwing compute at to see if we can get a few percentages better accuracy?

Jon: i think we need something.

Craig: as we leap into this brave new world of weather forecasting led by ai, one question looms large. how much trust will we place in a computer to tell us whether to grab our snow boots or pack our sunscreen? and are we ready to hand over the weather prediction reins over to algorithms, or do we need a human to touch and to keep us grounded? you know, i don't think we do because we've been using these apps forever, so i don't know if he would even notice ai giving us different stuff. but i'd love to hear your thoughts, share your prediction, and let's be honest, your gripes about the weather forecast. in our comment section, let us know.
