Introduction to the Players: Perplexity AI and TikTok
How the Perplexity AI and TikTok Merger Could Reshape Content Creation. In the rapidly evolving landscape of technology, two prominent players stand out: Perplexity AI and TikTok. Perplexity AI, known for its cutting-edge artificial intelligence solutions, is transforming how data is processed and utilized. By harnessing the power of natural language processing and real-time analysis, it aims to create meaningful interactions between users and technology. On the other hand, TikTok has redefined social media engagement with its short-form video content, captivating a global audience and encouraging creativity among its users. This merger represents not just an operational union but a cultural fusion that signals profound shifts in content creation and consumption.
As we delve deeper into this partnership, we’ll uncover the profound implications it could have not only for the tech world but for cultural exchange and content evolution. The convergence of these two powerhouses may lead to new levels of engagement, creativity, and indeed, a transformation in how we perceive digital content today.
TL;DR Perplexity AI and TikTok merger
TikTok went dark for a few hours on January 20, 2025, as ByteDance reached the U.S. Supreme Court-imposed deadline to divest TikTok’s U.S. operations. The temporary shutdown caused widespread concern among users and businesses reliant on the platform. However, President Donald Trump granted ByteDance a last-minute extension of 90 days to finalize a deal. Shortly after the announcement, TikTok came back online, alleviating fears of a prolonged outage and signaling continued negotiations amidst intense bidding competition for its U.S. assets.
Perplexity AI, a U.S.-based AI search engine startup, has submitted a bid to merge with TikTok’s U.S. operations, responding to a U.S. Supreme Court ruling requiring ByteDance to divest TikTok U.S. due to national security concerns. Other bidders, including Elon Musk and major equity firms, are competing for the platform. Analysts predict the merger process could take 90 days, with potential consumer impacts emerging in late 2025. While the exact bid amounts for TikTok’s U.S. operations have not been publicly disclosed, analysts estimate the valuation to be between $40 billion and $50 billion. Perplexity AI’s proposal includes forming a new entity combining Perplexity, TikTok U.S., and new capital partners, allowing most of ByteDance’s existing investors to retain their equity stakes.
Elon Musk has also been mentioned as a potential buyer, though TikTok has denied reports of discussions regarding such a sale.
Kevin O’Leary, renowned investor and “Shark Tank” star, has joined forces with billionaire Frank McCourt in a consortium known as “The People’s Bid for TikTok.” This group has submitted a formal offer exceeding $20 billion to acquire TikTok’s U.S. operations. O’Leary has emphasized the consortium’s commitment, stating, “We’re willing to pay up to $20 billion. The bid aims to transform TikTok into a decentralized platform that prioritizes user privacy and data control. McCourt’s Project Liberty, leading the initiative, intends to rebuild TikTok in a way that empowers its 170 million American users.
If successful, the Perplexity-TikTok platform would integrate AI-driven personalization with TikTok’s expansive video ecosystem, enhancing content curation and creator tools. This merger signals a significant shift for the future of social media, merging AI’s analytical power with short-form, engaging content, potentially setting new standards for global content consumption and cross-cultural exchange.

Craig: there's talk that perplexity is gonna merge with tiktoks.
Jon: yeah.
Craig: hap what happens when the brainy evolution of artificial intelligence meets the captivating world of viral dance challenges. you get a tech merger poised to turn content creation on its head. welcome to the fascinating union of perplexity, ai, and tiktok. this isn't just a collision of algorithms and trending tracks. it's a cultural shakeup that could redefine what we watch, share, and create online. now you love perplexity.
Jon: yep.
Craig: and you love tiktok?
Jon: i do. tiktok is great for my adhd.
Craig: yeah. two things i use very little of.
Jon: yeah.
Craig: ninety ninety nine percent of my tiktok use is you sending me the links, because i'm more of a youtube person yeah. which is just the way it is. mhmm. and i don't use perplexity ai as much as you do. i've used it a few times, but i've got, i'm working on other versions of different things. so what do you think this future perplexity ai merger with tiktok might look like? and then we'll get into the details of what's happening.
Jon: yeah. so, as you said, i love perplexity. i love using it for research. it's great. i've got the pro version, which really helps with that. so, and and for those of you that aren't on tiktok or don't use tiktok, just a quick caveat. like, it's great for microlearning. the things that i've learned on there, the topics that i found for us to talk about, and especially with my adhd, the, the tips and validations that i've gotten from there is phenomenal. so, if you're on the fence, i highly recommend it. who cares? everyone's looking at you, following you anyway, so what's one other country? but, yeah, this is cool. so, those of you that don't know, tiktok if you don't know, if you're probably living under a rock, so tiktok, has been banned, but, and and it went dark on sunday, came back on monday, because donald trump said he's not gonna enforce the ban. but it was banned due to national security measures because of potential chinese ownership. right? so the thing that's interesting about this so in the past, there have been, offers to buy the us operations of tiktok. this is different because they're looking to merge with u tiktok's us operations. so this could be great. i don't know if perplexity can leverage tiktok now for training data. if not, then this is a great great, value add for tiktok, i think. i think this is crucial. i think this is great, a great proposal. it can only benefit both, but who knows? for those of you that don't know, perplexity, they've experienced significant growth, which is with their valuation rising from five hundred million to nearly nine billion twenty twenty four. and so, this is a great opportunity to enhance its video offerings and expand its reach in the so, yeah, this is interesting. what do you think about this, craig?
Craig: well, let's let's get down to it. tiktok went dark for a few hours yesterday, january twentieth, as bytedance reached the us supreme court imposed deadline to divest tiktok's us operation. so yeah. they were told that they have to divest at least fifty percent of their operation or be shut down. yeah. the temporary shutdown cost what caused widespread concern among users and businesses relying on the platform. now i checked a couple of times during the day, and i didn't see that it was down. was it down in canada for you?
Jon: no. it was only down in the us.
Craig: just checking. i didn't know whether that was a us server base, whether it was geofenced, how that work. president trump granted bytedance a last minute extension. oh, we're not on the same page. let me share this, page instead. last minute extension of ninety days, to finalize the deal. shortly after the announcement, tiktok came back online, alleviating fears of prolonged outage, signaling continued negotiation, admits intense bidding competition, for its us assets. so they're really only talking about the us assets, the servers that are in the us that serve up this information. so perplexity, a us based ai search engine startup, which is used by everybody, has submitted a bid to merge with tiktok's operations, respond to us supreme court ruling required by dan by danse to divest tiktok us to national security standards. other bidders, including elon musk, although i'm not sure if elon musk is actually bidding or whether they're just rumors of them because he denies it, and major equity firms are competing for the platform. analysts predict the merger process will take or could take ninety days. potential consumer impacts, emerging late in twenty twenty five. yeah. the exact bid amount for tiktok us operation have not been publicly disclosed, but analyst estimates evaluation between forty and fifty billion. perplexity's ai proposal includes forming a new entity combining perplexity and tiktok us and new capital partners, allowing most of bytedance existing investors to retain an equity stake.
Jon: yeah.
Craig: so it's different as compared to, say, what kevin o'leary is doing. kevin o'leary, renowned investor from shark tank, has joined forces with billionaire frank mccourt in a consortium known as the people's bid for tiktok. he's always got something going on in that group. this group has submitted formal offer exceeding twenty billion to acquire tiktok us operations. o'leary has emphasized the consortium's commitment stating we're willing to pay up to twenty billion. the aim, to transform tiktok into a decentralized platform that prioritize user privacy and control. so we'll see where that goes.
Jon: yeah. so it's funny. just for those of you, like, this whole thing was to try to get away from china kind of, getting their claws into the us. but what's funny is this bin ended up i don't know if you know this, but people ended up going to this really hardcore chinese app called red note. and so it kind of backfired. their their, their strategy for this kinda backfired, but it's interesting. but, i think a merger is more likely than a buyout. what do you think?
Craig: well, they only have to give up fifty percent. so it's gonna be a merger of some sort. right? you know? and, again, it might be fifty one percent. but i think it'll be a combination of these things because perplexity can't, just doesn't have the money. yeah. so what this would look like. i'm also concerned that us regulators would have concerns about, an ai company merging with, and giving them even more data potentially or what that might mean.
Jon: yeah.
Craig: but i sit back and say, where we see this is an interesting play because perplexity sees a future where elon musk is looking at his building out his video platform more and more, and everyone was talking about if elon gets this, and he's got his x ai. so all of a sudden, he's got his ai platform built on this. and perplexity is like, well but wait. we could be the next google between the two of us, tiktok and perplexity. you know? from a youtube search engine video serving point of view, we could take on the world, between us. so that is an interesting offering. so we'll have to see.
Jon: just so you know, i've been on tiktok, i've been following this new company called neptune, and they've been raising money. the next they're they're trying to be a us tiktok. but they're, like, they i think they have an mvp. they've got a sign up sheet. so shout out to neptune. hopefully, you guys can accelerate your raise and get some traction there. but, yeah, that'd be interesting to see where this goes.
Craig: yeah. and i've i hear i see online everyone's going to rednote, and it's, you know, hard because there's no english in it and stuff. but i thought everyone was gonna move to lemonade, by the makers of tiktok. it's lemon and the number eight.
Jon: oh, i've never even heard of it.
Craig: so there's a tip right there, i guess. i thought people would be jumping to that. and i think, we could see really enhanced ai driven personalization, and improved creator tools, with an integration with perplexity and tiktok. and when you look at the tiktok store and the integration of some of these things and some of the tools that are third party right now, twitter and perplexity could start integrating all of that internally and really start taking advantage of some of those things. so okay. really, this could really have an increased convergence of ai and social media. but i guess when i sit back and say, you know, we're our social media is getting more and more dominated by ai created, like, ai content. and, like, every once in a while, we get in trouble or someone gives, me grief that our intro is an ai, intro. it's like, okay. i was playing around, and we talked about ai and stuff, and this is just an example. maybe, you know, but we're really here doing this where we can talking about this stuff. and sometimes, again, we get it wrong. but, however, there's always different concerns about ai and ai content. once you start integrating ai with the platform, ai content's gonna become more and more and more prevalent. it just naturally becomes so. you're or we might have an ai battling ai, but we already know that their ai content is not discouraged on these platforms.
Jon: yeah. yeah. it might just be my end, but, you're really cutting out on me. might just be on my end, though.
Craig: sorry. i hope am
Jon: i cutting out on you?
Craig: not that i've heard of, so it might be my end.
Jon: yeah. it's probably your end there. just a heads up. alright.
Craig: what are you thinking about this? like, is it gonna be perplexity? do you think you use tiktok way more than i, and you use perplexity more than i. what do you see as a feature of the two being merged? what a year from now, they're together. what does that look like inside the app?
Jon: sorry. i barely caught that. but, i i think i caught a little bit of it, but i i don't think perplexity will merge with tiktok. i don't know. i i hope that elon doesn't, but, i'd i'd be surprised if openai wasn't trying to get in there as well, but just quietly, or even claude. but i is claude american? i can't remember. but, anthropic. i think they are. but, anyways, i'm not sure. honestly, like, typically, i would have an opinion, but there's just not enough information for me to make a prediction if that makes sense. but i don't think perplexity will be the one to merge.
Craig: yeah. i don't think so either. i was looking at my microphone settings here to see if there was something i could change. i didn't see anything. everything looks normal on my end here.
Jon: maybe it's my end? because
Craig: if i'm am i still breaking up?
Jon: yeah. you're still breaking up a lot.
Craig: alright. let's let's wrap this one up, and then, we'll jump to the next one and see where we go. as we zip towards a brave new digital frontier, how will this ai meets tiktok revolution change the way we connect as a society? will we embrace these personalized gates to global culture, or will we come to miss the delightful randomness of scrolling through unfiltered chaos? one thing's for sure, it's an exciting time to be both a consumer and a creator in a world where everything is about to get a lot more tailored. prepare to dive into a new wave of content creation because it's high tide for innovation.
