Craig: imagine a world where artificial intelligence isn't just cool, but a creative partner in the scientific discovery process. this isn't science fiction. it's happening right now as ai has taken a remarkable leap by inventing a glowing molecule that could change how we solve scientific problems. what do you think about this, john?
Jon: this is crazy. this is scary because so the researchers at, i think it's evolutionary scale, they've developed a glowing protein. they developed it using ai. it's called esm gfp, and they used, an ai model called esm three, which mimics so the protein itself mimics the green fluorescent proteins found in jellyfish and corals and corals and is distinct from any naturally naturally occurring proteins with only fifty eight percent similarity to its closest known counterpart. this is the thing that blows me away. the remaining sequence requiring ninety six genetic mutations to evolve naturally would have taken over five hundred million years through natural evolutionary processes. does that not blow you away?
Craig: yeah. it does blow me away. i mean, like, the world is changing faster than we can think when we start talking about these discovery process. we talk about anthrobots. we talk about, ai discovering new proteins. yeah. all the discoveries they're doing, and new potential cures for things. it's we are, like, on the cusp of a brave new world now. we have to figure out how much of this stuff is being hallucinated and how much of it is real. like like, it's gotta it figured this out. let's put it to the test. so i'm really excited about these types of models that are redefining science and process and, like, five hundred million years to develop. like, that's crazy.
Jon: yeah. exactly. yeah. so how this worked was it was trained on two point seven eight for architecture similar to and so it was this protein that only exists right now as computer code, but, it has the potential for real world applications in biotechnology. so like we talked about before, drug development, cellular imaging, proteins, like, there's so the it's endless what this could be used for if this can be converted into a real world application.
Craig: and i wonder what this kind of research costs.
Jon: so that's a good question. i know that they received a hundred and forty two million in funding from amazon and nvidia. i don't know what their burn rate is. i'm sure it's relatively high. but i think that there's gonna be a huge cost in converting the code and synthesizing the code in a lab because, it's never been done before. so i think that's gonna be a huge cost there. but yeah. good point. like, how much did it cost to train this ai model, and how much did it cost to develop this. right? yeah.
Craig: so let's talk about potential applications because, you know, the glowing molecule, it has lots of potential applications, especially ones that are mid light. they can play key roles in various industries from medical imaging to creating more efficient solar spout cells. i've got a few listed here, next generation oleds, energy efficient screens, enhanced con contrast agents for biomedical imaging, targeting imaging probes for, you know, inside your body and whatnot, chemical and biological sensors, anti counterfeiting measures.
Jon: oh, yeah.
Craig: just to name a few. just envision using glowing, techniques to target tumors in noninvasive manner.
Jon: yeah. yeah. the other thing too is, maybe even environmental cleanup. they could create something to clean up the waste, nuclear waste, or clean up any kind of waste. right?
Craig: indeed. you know, the intersection of ai advances and effective digital marketing, so this is amazing, sir. just went off on a tangent there that they could target, you know, waste, you know, what that big plastic i guess they wouldn't target that big plastic island in the middle of the ocean wherever it is because they know where that is and they can deal with that. other things you could really target and do stuff with either in nature from a climate cleanup point of view, like, oil and gas bills?
Jon: yeah. exactly. yeah. oil and gas bills would be a small problem of the future potentially. who knows?
Craig: i love where we're going with this, and the fact that ai is now in the process where we use ai. i use ai every day. i have it beside me as, you know, almost a virtual assistant. so it automates some things, but sometimes it's just a back and forth conversation. i'm thinking about what about this? what about this? you know? what am i missing here? can you flush this i idea about a little bit more so i can take that and do stuff with it? now science can do the same thing. you know? can i feed the data and say clean this up and find patterns and, you know, do things that i wouldn't be able to do? it's amazing to be able to throw ai at these scientific problems and have it do five hundred million years of work and
Jon: exactly. yeah. and just to kinda connect it back to things that we've covered in the past. so we covered deepmind's alphafold, which is what revolutionized protein structure prediction. yep. so this, e s m three, takes it further by designing entirely new proteins. so, just to kind of put it into context as to things we've covered in the past. yeah.
Craig: and we also mentioned that, they recently open sourced alphafold. so, many research facilities have access to it. yeah. so i'm excited about these glowing molecules and then what we'll, see from them in the future.
Jon: yeah. this will be interesting.
Craig: so let us know what your thoughts are. where do you see these glowing molecules going, and what industries do you see them jumping into first? we'd love to hear your thoughts.
Jon: k.
