Programs guide
Prepare a stronger accelerator or incubator application by matching the program to your stage, evidence, needs and expectations.
Sample answers below use a fictional clinic-software startup. They illustrate specificity, not successful applications. Replace the assumptions, numbers and dates with your own evidence.
| Application question | Weak answer | Specific sample answer |
|---|---|---|
| What problem do you solve? | Healthcare needs disruption | Clinic managers told us they manually call patients to fill cancelled slots. We interviewed 12 managers; 8 described this workflow. We still need to measure how often it causes lost bookings. |
| What traction do you have? | Everyone loves it | Four clinics tried a paid pilot in May–July. Two renewed, one declined and one has not decided. We are measuring weekly use and staff time, not claiming product-market fit. |
| Why this program? | We want investors and exposure | Our next constraint is converting pilots into renewals. We want relevant sales mentors and three buyer introductions so we can test a repeatable offer during the program. |
| What will you achieve? | Scale globally | Over 12 weeks we will interview ten qualified buyers, test one price and track pilot renewal decisions. If renewal is weak, we will revise the workflow before hiring sales staff. |
For each listed program, save its current application instructions, stage requirements, sector, founder commitment, fee/equity terms and evidence requested. The directory identifies the organization; the actual cohort decides the application requirements.
These programs already exist in our directory. CDL and DMZ retain their October 12, 2026 source check. YSpace, YEDI, UTEST and BFN were updated October 26, 2026; the detailed preparation guides below separate published requirements from our suggested exercises.
| Program | Fit and published terms | Evidence to prepare | Application route |
|---|---|---|---|
| Creative Destruction Lab Toronto | Science/technology venture with potential for large scale; objective-based mentorship, no program fee or equity | Technical differentiation, founding team, commercial potential and objectives for the chosen stream | Choose a location/stream on CDL's application page |
| DMZ Incubator | 18-month growth program; no program fee, 2.5% equity in common shares | Current business and customer evidence, growth constraint, team commitment and cap table for term review | Application, screening call, deep-dive/due diligence and formal offer; confirm criteria in the current application |
| YSpace Tech Incubator | MVP ready for commercialization, clear go-to-market plan, innovative technology and a committed full-time team; up to two years, no equity | MVP demonstration, customer/traction evidence, go-to-market plan and founder commitment | Year-round application, team video call, virtual pitch and diligence; first two months free, then a monthly fee whose amount must be confirmed |
| YEDI Ventures in Residence | Canadian-resident applicants: YEDI graduates or innovative ventures needing space and guidance; sector agnostic, residence up to five years | Venture description, delivery team, milestones and whether incubation space is needed | Apply to the business acceleration program; education is tuition-free, space is paid at a quoted rate |
| UTEST | University of Toronto entrepreneurs creating research-based companies | Eligible U of T or affiliated-hospital founder connection, research/IP basis, invention disclosure and commercialization evidence | Applications closed until spring 2027. Competitive investment opportunity of $150,000 via SAFE; participation does not guarantee investment |
| Black Founders Network | Stage-specific Core, Accelerate and Scale support for Black founders; 2026 cycle applications closed | Founder/program eligibility, problem, evidence and fit with the chosen stage | Select the appropriate program and watch the official page for the next cycle |
Published fit: innovative technology, an MVP ready for commercialization and full-time, committed founders. You do not need to be a York student or graduate. Intake runs year-round; incubation can last up to two years.
Application route: apply online, then a selected team has a video conversation, a virtual pitch and due diligence. YSpace says decisions follow within two weeks of the pitch. Accepted teams receive two free months, followed by a monthly fee; no equity is taken. Ask for the fee and service inclusions before accepting.
Prepare for that conversation: keep a short working demo, define the first buyer and sales channel, and show what happened in interviews, pilots or sales. Label each number by date and distinguish a user, a paying customer and an expression of interest. Explain who works full time and what you need help executing next.
Suggested answer for the fictional clinic venture above: ‘Our MVP fills cancelled appointment slots. Two of four pilot clinics renewed. Over the next 90 days we want to test whether outreach to practice managers produces five qualified demos a month. We need help improving that sales process and measuring renewal.’ Replace every number with your own evidence.
Ventures in Residence is a space-and-guidance option for Canadian-resident applicants who are YEDI graduates or have an innovative venture. YEDI considers all industries and campus fit. Its official page currently invites applications.
Published terms: residence can run for up to five years. Educational components are tuition-free; space is paid, described by YEDI as below market rate. Advisors help set milestones. Follow Apply Now on the Business Acceleration Program page; the public overview does not set out a scored selection rubric or a fixed space price.
Prepare a campus brief: what you make, who buys it, what the team can deliver and why this location helps. Specify your space needs, equipment, utilities, access hours and intended start date. For a food or manufacturing venture, list the operating requirements you need the campus to accommodate; ask what the quoted space actually includes.
Suggested milestone: ‘Within 90 days we will complete three production trials, measure unit cost and test a paid order with two buyers.’ Attach the trial budget and explain the work your team owns. Before accepting space, request the total occupancy cost, deposit, minimum commitment and exit terms in writing.
Applications are closed until spring 2027. Eligible companies need at least one founder who is a current U of T student, faculty member or graduate within two years; U of T-affiliated hospital applicants are also included under the published criteria.
Published investment route: companies may qualify competitively for $150,000 through a SAFE. This is an investment opportunity, not a grant automatically awarded on admission. The criteria identify protectable IP and U of T-created research disclosed through the university. Hospital applicants should have submitted an invention disclosure to their host institution and informed its technology-transfer office of the application.
Use the wait for the next intake to prepare a one-page lab-to-market brief: the invention, what it does better than the current alternative, the experiments supporting that claim, the founder affiliation and the first buyer. List the IP owner, disclosure status and licensing questions still to resolve with your institution. Keep confidential technical documents in your private application pack.
Suggested evidence plan: separate technical proof from customer proof. For a diagnostic tool, a lab performance result answers a different question from a clinician agreeing to evaluate it. Set one technical milestone and one buyer-validation milestone, with an owner and budget for each. Review the spring 2027 call before submitting; do not reuse a previous cohort deadline or assume its investment terms will be unchanged.
The BFN main page says applications for the 2026 cycle are closed. Prepare for the appropriate stream; a community profile or expression of interest is not an offer of a cohort place.
| Stream | Published fit | What to prepare next |
|---|---|---|
| Core | Entrepreneurship foundations, ideation and community resources, including monthly office hours | Write the customer problem, assumptions to test and the next five people you will interview. Use the Core page for community access; separate award applications have their own eligibility |
| Accelerate | Early traction; Black-identifying, Canada-based lead founder with significant equity. U of T affiliation or nomination by a BFN community/investment partner | Bring your prototype, customer or revenue evidence, founder ownership and affiliation/nomination route. The published process requires IP education before the final interview; confirm the next cycle deadline |
| Scale | Black-led growth company that has raised and/or generated over $250,000 CAD since inception | Separate capital raised from revenue in your figures. Show customer/revenue growth, your main scaling constraint and a milestone budget; use the official expression-of-interest route |
For Accelerate, the published commitment averages two hours a week, with some busier weeks and a mix of online and in-person participation. Build that into the lead founder's calendar. Do not reuse the closed cycle's March or April dates for a future application.
Suggested application answer: ‘We are applying to Accelerate because we have a working product and three paying customers, but onboarding takes too long. We want to reduce setup time from ten days to five and measure whether that improves renewals.’ For Scale, explain the larger operating bottleneck and show the financial evidence behind it. These are preparation examples, not BFN application questions or selection guarantees.

A strong application makes program fit easy to understand. Be specific about the problem, customer, current evidence, next milestone and the help you need. Then verify the program's current terms, audience, capital, equity or fees, time commitment and application path. A polished deck cannot compensate for a program that does not fit the company's actual constraint.
No. Compare the program's stage, sector, support, capital, time commitment and terms with the company's current need. A smaller set of well-matched applications is usually easier to prepare honestly.
Requirements differ. Some support ideas or research while others expect a product, customers or revenue. Check the official eligibility and selection criteria for each program.
